The administrative centre of Antigua and Barbuda, St John’s is also the capital city and houses the seat of the Antigua and Barbuda Government since the nation achieved independence from Britain in 1981. One of the more developed municipalities in the Lesser Antilles, the city offers duty-free shopping malls, boutiques and is home to numerous tax-free jewellery stores. In addition there is a local market and plenty of local stalls selling foods and a variety of local fashions. St John’s city is also home to the cruise ships which regularly dock in its harbour at Heritage and Redcliffe Quay and where taxis await the numerous tourists who arrive for their day trips.
